Padi Huma Pandasan Week 4

Soil Heavy Metal Analysis

Heavy metal and metalloids contained in each soil type may be differ and can be use for multiple function. This test is carried out after sieved soils are separated according to their particles size. 1 gram of finest particle size is collected from 5 different soil samples to undergo acid digestion. The overall process was time-consuming but every detailed procedures are carried out carefully as we were exposed with chemical substances. For instance, strong acid like HNO3 (nitric acid). Students are advise to where mask as well as to prevent excess inhalation of fumes and avoid skin peel. All the solutions were cooled before carry out filtration and then dilution with ionization water. Diluted water samples from each soil is then taken to analyse by using ICP-MS. Lead (Pb), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), Magnesium (Mg) and lastly calcium (Ca) are determined. The results for our group is recorded and tabulated in the overall report.

Week 4
So basically after the fourth week, we watered the plant once per two day similar to week 3 as it was consecutive rainy day. Paddies has an obvious increase in height for pot B (Kg.E) and D (FSSA's Garden). Below is our results:

  • POT A (FSSA's Lake)

Number of seedlings observed : 11/20 (55%)
Highest shoot length : 43cm
Average length : 37cm
Deficiency : Leaves color turned paler green. Some leaves wilted.
Comment: Paddies do not seems to be in good form. (unhealthy)

  • POT B (Kampung's Lake)

Number of seedlings observed : 20/20 (100%)
Highest shoot length : 56cm
Average length : 51cm
Deficiency : Few pale leaves observed.
Others : Number of weeds increases per week.

  • POT C (PPIB)

Number of seedlings observed : 19/20 (95%)
Highest shoot length : 30cm
Average length : 25cm
Deficiency : Yellowish and some wilted leaves.

  • POT D (FSSA's Garden)

Number of seedlings observed : 19/20 (95%)
Highest shoot length : 72cm
Average length : 66cm
Deficiency : Pale green leaves
Others: Huge amount of weeds grown.

  • POT E (Construction Site)
Number of seedlings observed : 16/20 (80%)
Highest shoot length : 36cm
Average length : 31cm
Deficiency : Pale green leaves.
Comment: Paddies are not in good shape and unhealthy.

Plant Dry Weight and Length
Identically to the second week, 3 plants from each pot is taken out, cleaned and weighed and measured before left to dry at open air. After nearly 5 days, the dried paddies is weighed again using the electronic balance. Data obtained is shown below:

Air-dried plant ready to be weigh. From the left paddy from: FSSA's Lake, PPIB, Construction site, FSSA's Garden and lastly Kg. E.  We can see both paddies from FSSA's Garden and Kg. E is longer in length compared to paddies from other type of soil.

Electronic balance was used to weigh the air-dried paddy

*UPDATE*

Most paddies were wilted 😭 as we did not water them since the last few days.
