Group Padi Huma Pandasan Week 2

SOIL TEXTURE

After allowing the soils to settle out, we calculate the percentage of Clay, Silt and Sand layers. This then enable us to identify the soil texture of the soils collected from 5 different area in UMS by using the Soil Textural Triangle. Here are the results obtained:

POT

  • POT A (FSSA)

Clay = 0.1/11.5 x 100% = 0.87 %
Silt = 9.4/11.5 x 100% = 81.74 %
Sand = 2.0/11.5 x 100% = 17.39 %
Soil Texture : Silt
  • POT B (Kampung E's Lake)

Clay = 0.1/9 x 100% = 1.11 %
Silt = 7.9/9 x 100% = 87.78 %
Sand = 1.0/9 x 100% = 11.11 %
Soil Texture : Silt
  • POT C (PPIB)

Clay = 0.5/8 x 100% = 6.25 %
Silt = 5.7/8 x 100% = 71.25 %
Sand = 1.8/8 x 100% = 22.5 %
Soil Texture : Silt Loam
  • POT D (FSSA's Garden)

Clay = 0.5/8.5  x 100% = 5.88 %
Silt = 6.5/8.5  x 100% = 76.47 %
Sand = 1.5/8.5  x 100% = 17.65 %
Soil Texture : Silt Loam
  • POT E (Construction Site)

Clay = 1.2/7.3  x 100% = 16.44 %
Silt = 4.9/7.3  x 100% = 67.12 %
Sand = 1.2/7.3  x 100% = 16.44 %
Soil Texture : Silt Loam

As mentioned, all soils were obtained in UMS. Here's a peek to their exact location 👀

Location A
Soil Texture : Silt

The FSSA's Lake became one of the attraction for local and foreign tourists who visited our Eco-Campus. Few of them enjoy the cool breeze, snap some photos while others prefer to jog here during evening.

Location B
Soil Texture : Silt

Fertile soils can be found here! Residents for Kampung E would never tired looking at this lake each time they go or back from lectures.😄

Location C
Soil Texture : Silt Loam

Pusat Penataran Ilmu dan Bahasa a.k.a PPIB is a place where students learn as well as brush up their local / foreign languages.

Location D
Soil Texture : Silt Loam

FSSA's garden provides a peace and serene environment. Students can enjoy and relax their mind here, listen to bird chipping, read some books and nap as well.

Location E
Soil Texture : Silt Loam

This wide area is located just a stone throw away from Kampung E. Land has been cleared for hostel purposes and the construction is still on-going.

As usual, all the paddy plants are watered daily (depends on condition of weather since we left in open air). There is an obvious change in the length of shoots compared to first week. Here's our observation for week 2:
POT A (FSSA's Lake)

Number of seedlings observed : 9/20 (45%)

Highest shoot length : 21cm
Average length : 14cm

Deficiency : -

POT B (Kampung's Lake)

Number of seedlings observed : 20/20 (100%)

Highest shoot length : 34cm
Average length : 28cm

Deficiency : -
Others : Some weeds were observed.

POT C (PPIB)

Number of seedlings observed : 19/20 (95%)

Highest shoot length : 21cm
Average length : 18cm

Deficiency : -

POT D (FSSA's Garden)

Number of seedlings observed : 19/20 (95%)

Highest shoot length : 41cm
Average length : 36cm

Deficiency : -
Others: Weeds grown.

POT E (Construction Site)

Number of seedlings observed : 16/20 (80%)

Highest shoot length : 18cm
Average length : 13cm

Deficiency : -

Nutrient Analysis
A lab is carried out to identify the three major plant macronutrients, Nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P) and Potassium (K). No doubt each soil has different nutrient holding capacity and they play a significant role to aid plants' productivity. This allowed us to understand the different of nutrient available in each soils and how does it affect the growth of paddy plant.
p.s. we did not conduct the Potassium (K) test instead we carried out the Sulphur analysis.
Average readings were taken for more accurate result. Below is our outcome obtained:

  1. Questions for next report:

    (1) Why did the soil weight reduce after 1 week?

    (2) Which soil texture have the most capacity to hold water ?

    Further discussion relates to soil compaction, soil porosity, soil permeability and aeration effect on plant growth and root growth.

    (3) How does the amount of macronutrients in each soil texture affect paddy plant growth?

    (4) From observation which soil has the best condition to grow paddy with the combination of soil pH, soil texture, and nutrients amount availability.
