Overall Summary Report Dancing Butterfly (CLICK HERE)

MATERIAL PREPARATIONS:

(1) 5 recycle plastic pots that can fit in about 5 litres of soil.
~ make several holes at the bottom of the pot for drainage.

(2) Use only one type of soil which is up to the group own choice selection, preferably soil with pH6~8, better pH7.
~ Do a soil pH test and soil texture triangulation for soil texture type for the report.
~ Because there are 5 pots to fill and also soil test, prepare at least 6 litres of soil.

(3) Prepare four long twigs for each pot.
~ Before seed sowing, make a support for the growing seedlings to climb as they grow.
~ Later observe the tendrils between plants (strength and numbers).

(4) 4 music selection for genre (only one song each, don't mix):
~ Gamelan (Nusantara instrument)
~ Indian Classic (Indian instruument)
~ Chinese Classic (Chinese instrument)
~ Rock Metal

Here we upload the songs we played for the plants

Indian Classical Instrument

Rock Metal

                                              Chinese Classical Instrument

                                                               Gamelan

(5) Video recorder (smartphone) and Camera.

(6) Water the plant twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon.
~ Make sure you give the same amount of water for each watering (tap water).

(7) Ruler/measurement tape
~ to record the growth of the plant.

PROCEDURE:

(1) Air dry some of soil samples (about 500gram) for heavy metal and macronutrient analysis.
~ Before soil are dried outside of the lab, take the measurement of wet soil weight.
~ The week after if the soil is totally dried up, take the measurement of dry soil weight.
~ Keep soil dry until further analyse.

(2) Fill up the pot with soil and sow the seed about 2 cm depth of soil from air.

(3) For 1 pot sow 10 seeds each and space them apart from each other, so next time you can dug out several whole plants carefully out from the soil without disturbing other seedlings.

(4) After seed sowing, water the soil everyday.

(5) Then start to expose the seeds until one whole month everyday 20 minutes each in the morning and afternoon.
~ Make sure the other plant genre is not listening to the other music (isolate).
~ Specify one pot for one genre.
~ One pot does not listen to any music will be the control for this experiment.

OBSERVATION RECORD:

(1) Germination rate for each pot.
(2) How long does seeds start to sprout an emerge from the soil for each pot.
(3) Mortality/Survival rate of the plant growth.
(4) Growth of the plant of each plant for every week.
(5) Movement of the plant (if any).
(6) After a month, counts nodules on each plant roots for comparison (which genre makes it more a good nitrogen-fixer?).
(7) Nutrient and heavy metal content availability to plant.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

(1) Does music or sound stimulate the growth of plant?
(2) Do plants response when expose to certain type of music?
(3) Does music or sound influence the ability of the plant to absorb nutrient from the soil?
(4) Is the nutrient in soil sufficient for the plant to grow?
(5) Are there any heavy metal contamination in the soil?
